Our Business Consulting process, step by step

We follow the same structured approach on every engagement. Here is exactly what happens from the moment you pick up the phone to the day we hand over the final deliverables.

Six steps from first call to results

Each step has a clear purpose and a defined output. You will always know what is happening, what comes next and what it will cost.

1
30 minutes, free

Initial conversation

You call us or fill in the form on our contact page. A consultant, not a salesperson, picks up. We ask about your business: what it does, how many people work there, what problem is keeping you awake. You ask us anything you like about how we work and what we charge.

By the end of the call we will tell you honestly whether we think we can help. If we can, we outline a rough scope and timeline. If we cannot, we explain why and, where possible, suggest someone who might be a better fit.

2
3–5 working days

Proposal and fee agreement

After the call, we write a short proposal. It describes the work we will do, the information we will need from you, the deliverables you will receive and the total fixed fee. We also list what is not included, so there are no grey areas later.

You review the proposal, ask questions and either accept, request changes or decline. There is no pressure. If you want to think about it for a week, that is fine. If you want to get a competing quote, we encourage it.

3
1–4 weeks, depending on scope

Discovery and data gathering

Once you sign the engagement letter, we start collecting the information we need. For an operational review this means visiting your premises, observing workflows, interviewing key staff and pulling financial data from your accounting system. For a growth strategy we analyse your sales pipeline, cost structure, market position and competitor landscape.

We try to minimise disruption. Interviews are short, typically 30 to 45 minutes per person. We schedule them around your busiest periods, not ours. All data is treated as confidential and stored securely.

4
1–3 weeks

Analysis and recommendations

This is where we do the heavy thinking. We process the data, build models, test assumptions and develop a set of recommendations. Each recommendation is specific: what to change, how to change it, what it will cost to implement and what the expected benefit is in pounds and pence.

We do not pad the report with background research you already know. The document is concise, usually between 15 and 30 pages, with an executive summary on the first page so you can grasp the key points in five minutes.

5
Half day

Presentation and discussion

We present the findings to you and your senior team in person at your premises. This is not a lecture. We walk through the recommendations, answer challenges, listen to objections and adjust where your on-the-ground knowledge reveals something our data missed.

By the end of the session you will have a prioritised action list with owners and deadlines. If you want us to help implement the changes, we can agree a follow-on scope at this point. If you prefer to take it from here, the report and action list are yours to keep.

6
3 and 6 months after delivery

Follow-up check-ins

Every engagement includes two follow-up calls at no extra charge. At three months we review which recommendations you have implemented, what results you are seeing and whether any adjustments are needed. At six months we do the same and compare actual outcomes against the projections in our report.

These calls keep the momentum going. Businesses often implement the quick wins immediately but let the bigger changes drift. The scheduled check-in gives you a reason to stay on track, and gives us a chance to troubleshoot if something is not working as expected.

Principles that shape every engagement

Process is important, but principles matter more. These four commitments guide how we behave on every project, regardless of size or sector.

Fixed fees, agreed in advance

We do not bill by the hour. You will never receive a surprise invoice or watch the meter run while we think. The fee is agreed before we start, and it only changes if you ask us to expand the scope. This means we are motivated to work efficiently, not slowly.

Confidentiality by default

Everything you share with us stays between us. We do not discuss your business with other clients, even anonymously, unless you give written permission. Our engagement letter includes a confidentiality clause, and we are happy to sign your own NDA if you prefer.

Honest advice, even when it is uncomfortable

If your pet project does not make financial sense, we will say so. If the problem is a people issue rather than a process issue, we will say that too. You are paying us for our professional judgement, and watering it down to avoid an awkward conversation would be a disservice.

Your business, your decisions

We recommend. You decide. We will never push you into a course of action or make you feel foolish for choosing a different path. Our job is to give you the clearest possible picture of your options and their likely consequences. What you do with that picture is entirely up to you.

What the experience feels like

Clients sometimes worry that bringing in a consultant will unsettle their staff. In practice the opposite tends to happen. When employees see that management is investing in proper analysis rather than making changes on a hunch, they feel more confident, not less.

We introduce ourselves to your team at the start of the project, explain why we are there and make clear that we are not auditing individual performance. The interviews we conduct are conversations, not interrogations. We ask open questions: what works well, what frustrates you, what would you change if you could. People are usually relieved to have someone outside the company listen to their perspective.

Throughout the project your lead consultant is available by phone and email. We send a brief weekly update so you always know where things stand. If something unexpected comes up, a finding that needs immediate attention or a delay in getting data, we flag it straight away rather than waiting for the next scheduled meeting.

After the project ends, you are welcome to call us informally if a question arises six or twelve months down the line. We do not charge for a quick phone call to a former client. That kind of ongoing relationship matters to us, and it is how most of our repeat work and referrals come about.

Start with step one

The first call is free, takes about 30 minutes and commits you to nothing. We will listen to your situation, give you an honest opinion and outline what working together would look like. If it is not the right fit, we will tell you.
